SPEAKING of Pringle to Atwater in the course of a fairly general disquisition on the ups and downs of himself and his friends, Barlow said:
âOf course he was intended by nature to be gold-dug and, as a compensation, given a temperament that enjoys the process.â
âOlga?â
âAnd now Olga has gone it will be someone else.â
Barlow put his fork into the spaghetti on his plate and twisted it round and round so that it clung knotted about the prongs. Then he forced it into his mouth. He said:
âHis show is doing very well. I only hope mine will do as well in the autumn.â
âDid you do anything with Scheigan?â
âHe wanted to take two things away and send me the money from America when he got back, as his draft on the bank over here wasnât big enough.â
âDid you do it?â
âIn the end he took a drawing and gave me a pound for it on account.â
âHeâs open-handed.â
âHe canât resist beauty,â said Barlow; âhe told me he couldnât.â
âHow is he getting on with Harriet?â
âShe wonât come near him. Sheâs got his gold cigarette-case. Heâs very upset.â
âHarriet is a smart girl.â
âHarriet is a nice girl,â said Barlow. âBut sheâs a bit too clever for me.â
âHow is Sophy?â
âSophy has gone out of London to see her sister. It makes a change for both of us.â
âThen you think Raymond has fallen for Harriet?â
âI hope it stops him from ringing up Sophy all day long. Iâm not afraid that heâll take her away from me, but I donât like it.â
âDoes he ring her up often?â
Barlow said: âNo, I donât think so. But Iâm not sure.â He said: âWas it you dining with Susan Nunnery the other night?â
âYes.â
âSheâs a nice girl,â said Barlow. âNot my sort. But nice.â
âI like her.â
Barlow said: âWaiter, a black coffeeâwill you have a black coffee?âtwo black coffees, and I shall have a cheap cigar. Let me see what youâve got.â He said: âWhat I really wanted to talk to you about was not women but the picture that Naomi Race picked up the other day.â
âItâs not bad.â
âGood condition?â
Atwater said: âA trifle sfumato. Rather in the manner of Valdès.â
